Will my credit cards be accepted in other countries?

Sara Raney, Senior Travel Advisor - Alaska and Antarctica Specialist

When traveling abroad, you must give careful consideration to which credit cards you take with you. I have found that American Express cards, for example, are not excepted in every country. If that is the only charge card that you have, you may find yourself in a real jam after you get there!

By the way, American Express Travel lost their fight to only accept American express cards for payment. (American Express has been  fighting for years  for the right to prohibit merchants from encouraging their customers to use their preferred charge cards.) And, in case you haven’t heard, Costco Wholesale Corporation recently announced that they are ending their partnership with American Express.

Personally, I have never had any problems with using a VISA or MasterCard in foreign countries.

Be sure to discuss this topic with your travel consultant when making your travel plans.

Peace of mind: priceless!
