Good news for cruise ships, bad news for Venice!

Good news for cruise ships, bad news for Venice!

Sara Raney, Senior Travel Advisor - Alaska and Antarctica Specialist

Recently the law banning cruise ships weighing more than 96,000 gross tons from entering  Venice’s largest canal, Giudecca Canal, was repealed. (January 2015). The ban was enacted in December 2014 to protect the lagoon environment and building in Venice from any  physical damage that would be caused by large ships. Because cruise lines have already made  arrangements and scheduled port of calls elsewhere, a new entrance to the lagoon is being built to accommodate large ships.

Historical Venice is made up of over 105 small islands with over 140 bridges.  This is not a place for someone in a wheelchair, scooter, or walker. Venice is a place where you need to be able to get in an out of a moving boat and walk up and down steps.  This is an old city with very narrow streets and alleyways. No cars, bicycles, skateboards, or motorized vehicles of any kind are allowed. Think of it this way: you step from your motor boat into your hotel.

This is a very popular and expensive place to visit, however it is not for everyone. If you have “special needs,” it is important to work with someone who understands and specializes in working with people who need TLC.

Always remember that when you leave the USA, the ADA (American Disabilities Act) does not apply.

Piece of Mind: Priceless
