If someone cancels out for any reason before final payment they usually get a full refund. If it’s within three months prior to departure, the cancellation may be prorated. Always get everything in writing from your cruise company, travel advisor, and/or your travel insurance company.

What happens if my roommate cancels at the last minute before our cruise?

Recently, I spoke with an individual who was very upset. Her roommate canceled a few days prior to departure. Her travel agent said that because the fare had been paid by her roommate, she could take another person with her for free.

Well, you can imagine what would have happened when they arrived at the terminal for boarding. The person would most likely have not been allowed to board the ship!

I contacted several  cruise companies and  travel insurance companies trying to get a definitive answer on this for her. All I can say is that I am more confused now than before.

If this ever happens to you, expect to pay a single rate (whatever the cruise company’s fee is to have the entire room to yourself, which could be as much as double the price) unless you are able to find another paying roommate at the last minute OR you have a good travel insurance policy that specifically covers you for a roommate situation like this.

Travel insurance offers protection when the unexpected happens – and it does happen!

Other things to think about before booking your cruise:

  • What happens if I lose track of time when I’m sightseeing and the ship leaves port without me?
  • What are my rights if I am asked to leave the ship in another country due to illness or injury? Do I have a choice?
  • What arrangements do I need to make in advance if I have special needs, or if I want to travel with my service-animal?
