Confused? Advertising is not only confusing, it can be misleading!

Recently, a couple brought in a brochure from a leading cruise company that they had booked with. On the front page, in bold print, it advertised: “Two for one, free airfare, gratuities included, early booking discount $2,000.00. Additional Special Offers.”

I contacted the cruise company. Before I had time to say I was an agent, I was told by the obviously recently trained sales agent that  I would get  2 for 1 cruise fares and free airfare. Plus I would get $2,000.00 off for early booking. The advertising companies understand that there are still many gullible people who think you can get something for free. Nothing is free!

As a professional travel consultant/advisor I have access to the real cost, which lists the cost of the cruise, airfare, transfers, etc. Keep in mind that anyone can add money on to a booking and then say there is a discount.  In this case, I noticed that $800.00 per person was added on to their cruise fare for airfare!

I was able to cancel their airfare through the cruise company, deduct $1,600.00 from the cost of the cruise, and then purchase cheaper airfare for them.

Like all businesses marketing, advertising is geared to selling us something. It does not always provide clear, concise information. The information you need is usually covered in several paragraphs of unreadable small print.

It is always smart to have a professional travel consultant – who is representing you, and your best interests – review the information before you sign a contract or book a trip/cruise. A one hour consultation can make all the difference between having a joyful vacation… or one that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons.
